Feature synopsis

In 1885, white miners massacred 28 Chinese laborers in Rock Springs, Wyoming.

No one was prosecuted.

A century later, no one remembers. Except Peter Chen.

Peter wrote his PhD dissertation on the massacre. Now he works at the Rock Springs Historical Museum. As the janitor. Every day, tourists flood past him to see Butch Cassidy's Colt .45 while the Chinese Massacre Exhibit sits empty. Peter mops the floor and watches. His only company is Jeremy — his dead best friend. Peter talks to him anyway.

When Peter finds a pulp comic — The Mysterious Dr. Fu Manchu — Jeremy points out the obvious: Peter looks like him. Peter's conclusion: Fu Manchu is Butch Cassidy if Butch Cassidy had looked like Peter Chen.

When a waitress named Laura asks his name, Peter makes a choice. "Fu," he says. "F. U." Armed with a stolen Colt .45 and $2,000 from the Butch Cassidy donation box — money meant for his estranged daughter Claire's eviction — Peter steps into the myth he has created. For the first time, he is seen. Heard. Feared.

What follows is a robbery, an escape, a deputy's death, and a flight into the Wyoming desert — where the man and the myth finally come apart. He walks back into Rock Springs to finish his story. Laura sees Peter clearly. Then shoots him dead.

The money reaches Claire. In the cave, by the dead fire, a crude stone marker reads: Fu was here. History records what it chooses. Fu will be remembered. Peter Chen will not.
